David Trubridge | Designer | Design Spot On

It’s not everyday that a cultural designer lists ‘writing’ as the greatest invention of all time but David Trubridge is not your average designer. Not one for taking small steps, David is constantly taking his work to new levels, taking inspiration from his surroundings and from all his various adventures around the world. He predicts that the world will look different in 15 years – either we wise up or we perish. Not much has changed since his days as a youngster making ships out of used matchsticks. David remains fascinated with wood, boats and recycled materials, his aesthetic designs continuing to permeate with the influential ‘wild empty landscape’. Trendspotting took David aside to find out what else makes this savvy designer tick.

Trendspotting: Who or what inspires you?
David Trubridge: Wild empty landscape

Trendspotting: What is the greatest invention of all times and why?
David Trubridge: Writing, because it is one of the few things that define us as being human, enabling us to express ourselves and communicate, not just with each other but across time.

Trendspotting: What invention would have been better off if it hadn’t been invented?
David Trubridge: The atom bomb

Trendspotting: What are the three things you don’t leave the house without?
David Trubridge: My happiness, my love of life and some cash to buy a coffee.

Trendspotting: What was the last concert you saw?
David Trubridge: Fat Freddy’s Drop

Trendspotting: If you could have any superpower, what would it be?
David Trubridge: Flight.

Trendspotting: What’s your favourite style of food?
David Trubridge: Fresh, raw seafood and vegetables.

Trendspotting: If you could have dinner with any famous person, who would it be?
David Trubridge: Dostoyevsky

Trendspotting: What would you imagine the world to look like in 15 years from today?
David Trubridge: Very different! Either we will have increased greatly in wisdom and

maturity, hence able to live simpler but more contented lives. Or, if we haven’t, we will be in serious trouble squabbling nastily over diminishing resources and

habitable land.

Trendspotting: If you could chose any place to live in the world where would you want to live?
David Trubridge: Anywhere warm by the sea with steady winds for windsurfing, lots of sensitive artistic people and

no motorheads destroying nature with monster 4WDs. Not sure where that is yet!

Trendspotting: Is there anything else you want to share with the world?
David Trubridge: One of the first things I made when I was a kid, was a ship out of used matchsticks that I had collected off a beachside promenade. I still make things with wood, try to recycle materials and love boats!
