30-11-2010 Not Your Average Toy Watch

Admit it. You love plastic toys as much as that three-year-old playing with his transformer doll. You might also love an oversized watch that looks like a cross between plastic and ceramic (dubbed Plasteramic). ToyWatch. It’s bright, big and colourful. Browse through a range of styles that are designed to look like luxury designer watches from Milan-based designer Marco Mavilla. Do they look familiar? You might have seen them on celebrities like Madonna, Charlize Theron, Oprah Winfrey, Al Gore, Leonardo DiCaprio and the Ellen DeGeneres show. That’s right - flashing their big toy watch guns.

25-11-2010 Muji the Japanese Ikea

Muji. The Japanese Ikea. Minimalism is its motto. So in keeping with the minimalist feel, I won’t say too much more on that. Except that you can read more about their motto here. Not only do they keep it simple, they also keep it eco friendly. They refuse to use harmful materials and packaging is kept to a minimum. Check out their unisex ankle socks made from recycled yarn. Available in an assortment of cool and crazy colours, they are a super comfy way to get the addiction started. Using recycled cardboard, unbleached cotton and practicing sustainable forestry, you can be sure your furniture and

clothing from Muji comes from a good place.

formidable creations from Design for Use, known by their respective names, ‘History by the Meter’ and ‘Technology by the Meter’, are exemplary in literally showing how useful design can be. Each ruler set stretches out to two meters with a set theme of historic outlines. Filled with useful facts and
compact in nature, they come in a vintage style complete with an overview of historical events and technological innovation. The only drawback might be whether you’re allowed to use them in history exams (we won’t tell if you won’t).

18-11-2010 A Bit of Urban to your Ears

We love people who care about what they do: namely, making headphones. Urbanears is a collective from Scandinavia wanting to build global relationships with their brand, focusing on design, form and bringing people together to ‘transcend individuality and unify the sound experience’. Well that ‘sounds’ pretty good to us. Colour and form are crucial to the brand and their headphones reflect this: embodying that style of retro DJ we all aspire to casually possess. They are highly functional, fashionable and stylish; they also provide rich, secluded sound. To make matters more compact, it even folds down to the size of your fist, so you could say it truly packs a punch.

15-11-2010 An Eco Friendly Fireplace

Before you walk out to collect some wood to keep the fire burning, let me present you with an alternative. Blomus is a modern design company from Germany that specialises in home and office furnishings, using stainless steel to create beautiful works of art. The eco-friendly Vidro fireplace is low on pollution, fueled by clean and smokeless ethanol. It’s also an incredibly stylish, first class and modern fireplace with a sleek, stainless steel finish, perfect for homes without chimneys. It’s easy to install and maintain and is rapidly growing in popularity around the world, particularly in Europe. This is the modern day answer to keeping your home warm without sacrificing the cosy ambience that can only come from the glow of a fire.

10-11-2010 Vintage Paperweights

Keep paper where it should be with collectible, limited edition Woodland Animal paperweights from Mirjami Design. Individually handmade, these unique creations have their own look and come in the form of owls, mice and shrews. Made with British woollen fabrics and stuffed with recycled polyester and steel pellets to keep them settled on the page. Laura Mirjami has been creating animals from vintage Finnish fabrics and is constantly on the hunt for rare, vintage fabrics, which she uses to create adorable pieces with individuality and flair. I’m personally a fan of the wide-eyed owls with their cute, pondering expressions.

05-11-2010 Light as a Feather

Sleek, light and weightless - the new MacBook Air needs no introduction. Coupled with functionality, mobility and a flawless design, Apple (our favourite technological fruit) is launching a new generation of MacBooks with the intention of eventually replacing mechanical hard disks and optical drives. Relish in the virtual weightlessness of only 2.3 pounds! Enjoy increased mobility with longer battery time and the very affordable starting price of $999. Although we advise you take caution when attempting to hold the MacBook Air with your bare hands – this baby is so hot it might burn*.

*Well, not literally.

01-11-2010 Eco Friendly Organic Perfume

Chemicals here, chemicals there, chemicals everywhere! When did life get so messy? Perfume designer Olivia Giacobetti addressed this when she created a line of 100 percent certified organic fragrances free of all the chemicals that aggravate the skin. Her label Honore des Pres has been creating organic perfumes made of natural essences and has recently launched the ‘I Love NY’ fragrance collection featuring ‘Love Coco’, ‘Vamp a NY’ and ‘I love les Carottes’. Not only is she ecological and organic, but also the designs reflect the eco-conscious nature of the perfumes. The packaging won a prize for best design (our favourite is the coffee take-away cup bottle!)
