15-09-2011 Individual Ikea: Mykea
Dutch design innovators Mykea have tapped into the Ikea market and have propelled a design trend for online shoppers worldwide. Mykea recruits artists and designers to custom create designs on stickers that perfectly fit onto the surfaces of the naturally naked Ikea furniture pieces. Most home dwellers who have refurbished their apartments or houses the world over are likely to have a love/hate relationship with the Swedish furniture giant, Ikea. The affordability and slick minimalist designs draw customers in but everyone feels a little bit peeved by Ikea’s mass production system that has neighbours owning the same coffee tables and shelves. Mykea provides a creative solution to the bane of Ikea’s replication model so that unique artwork can be injected into a home interior in a few D.I.Y. minutes.
